Lyrics by Howard Anshell
I woke up and I looked around;
I listened—
I could not hear a sound,
So I put on my fancy shades and stepped up to tea.
I walked around for many long years,
Till I met a man
With elephant’s ears,
Who said he could hear things
I couldn’t see.
He told me
Of the tyrant’s arms—
Oily fingers bringing harm.
“I know these things!” he cried,
“There ain’t no place that you can hide
To stop what’s going on outside
In the dynasty’s eyes!”
But you don’t need
Fancy shades
To see the
Harbinger of Hades—
You can do it with your eyes closed!
And you don’t need
Elephant’s ears
To hear the screaming and the tears—
‘Cause you can feel it down in your whole!
Oh. Lord
Make me a mirror –
Let the reflection shine on you…
Please, Lord, tell me what I can do…
I’m going
Across the border—
What I wanted at last!
I’m going to
Put my life in order
In the past.
A face familiar—
The look was in your eye…
My, how time can fly…
